Olivia: “In just the last few years, I’ve started to paint Bettie Page again, and it’s exciting. I love her attitude, she always seemed to be having a good time, doing anything…. hanging around, the ultimate party girl. There was just so much graphically interesting in her fetishwear, her many expressive poses, that she has been an endless source of ideas and images.
When I was first painting her (1975) she was nearly unknown. Blonde bombshell Monroe had predecessors, Bettie Page had none. Bettie is the iconic figurehead of it all, no fetish star existed before her.
Bettie has now become a basic element in the pinup world. Her signature haircut, seamed stockings, wasp-waist corsets, and snub-nosed stilettos, are forever her signatures. I’ve really enjoyed watching her fame rise, remembering when I asked “Who’s that?” Well, now we all know.”
